NAUI Underwater Archaeology Course

NAUI Underwater Archaeology Course

This NAUI course provides you with a fundamental introduction into underwater archaeology work.  One of the main themes through this program is to document and assess the archaeological site without damaging the site or adjacent marine environment.

We will utilize Spanish Galleon shipwrecks, located in the Florida Keys, to educate you on the fundamentals of assessing and documenting historical archaeology sites.  We may use shipwrecks such as the El Infante, San Jose, and El Capitan.   Divers involved in this introductory course should focus on non destructive methods of interpretation and investigation; and be available to perform invaluable volunteer assistance to accredited professional archeologists.   This introduction to this program helps develop the divers’ underwater detective skills.

The price of this weekend course is only $688.00 after tax, all inclusive and provides the following:

All meals, snacks, iced tea or lemonade, live aboard accommodation, dive tanks (aluminum 80's 3000PSI), air fills, weights and belts, course materials and Certification fee.  Please feel free to bring your personal beverage of choice

Sample Itinerary:

You may board the “M/V KATE” anytime after 7:00 P.M., the evening before your trip.  This allows you sufficient time to put away your gear.  This is a good time to meet the crew and get acquainted with the vessel.  We have a great local pub next door called "Shipwrecks" where you may have a nice meal at reasonable prices.  We will meet back at the boat at 10:00 P.M. to address paperwork and briefings.  Sometime during the night or early morning hours the "KATE" will head out to the first dive site.

Day One:

You will awake to a wonderful continental breakfast prepared by our infamous galley wench Pasha.  As you’re enjoying your meal we will begin the morning lectures.  After lunch you will have your fist dive of the day demonstrating your newly learned skills of how to set up grids and survey our first archaeology site.  We will return to the boat for a home cooked meal and follow it up with a debriefing of our days event.  We will finish up with remaining lectures and enjoy the evening on the party deck.

Day Two:

You will begin the morning with a fresh hot breakfast and socialize with fellow students and crew.  A briefing will precede the morning dive where you will have another opportunity to fine tune your previous learned skills, as well as apply the final course objectives.  Upon completion of the dive, we will have another debriefing over lunch and complete all certification requirements.  Time permitting, we will a “Graduation” Dive of the classes choice, just before we cruise back to the dock.
